Tourism & Brief Facts About Peru.

MACHU PICCHU, ONE OF THE MOST WONDERFUL ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE IN AMERICA

Without a doubt, Peru has an unequalled place in America for its archaeological sites.

These should be one of the highlights while visiting and studying at UNMSM.

Spanish is the main language. Many of the Andean Indians are bilingual (Spanish and an indigenous language). Some indigenous peoples speak Quechua as their first language (especially around Cusco). Near Lake Titicaca, Aymará is mostly spoken.

Do not be surprised to find out that more than two million inhabitants from the remote parts of the country do not speak Spanish at all.

Most travelers  do not need a visa to enter Peru.
Our study groups can get up to 90 day stay.

Vaccinations are advisable. Consult your doctor. Definitely avoid salads and fruit you cannot peel and do not drink tap water.
Land transportation is quite inexpensive and buses go almost everywhere.
Taxis do not have meters. Make sure you discuss the fare in advance.
Peru uses 220V, 60 Hz. electricity.

Lima, the capital of Perú, was founded by Francisco Pizarro on January 6, 1535. The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos was founded on May 12, 1551, and thus it is the oldest University in North or South America. About one-third of Peru´s 27 million inhabitants live in Lima. The heart of the city is the Plaza de Armas, the Government Palace, the Cathedral and other beautiful colonial buildings.

The Vía Expresa in an important expressway and Avenida Arequipa is the main street for bus transportation to the southern "suburbs" of San Isidro, Miraflores and Barranco.

Miraflores is located on the coast and has many of the capital's best restaurants and Barranco is very popular with the young crowd for its nightlife.

Cusco is the archaeological capital of the Americas and the oldest continuously inhabited city on the continent. It was the capital of the Inca Empire. Many of the streets are narrow and lined with stone walls built by the Incas. Its elevation reaches 3326 meters.

Lake Titicaca at 3820 meters is the highest navigable lake in the world and the largest lake in South America.

Huaraz is the climbing center of Perú with Huascarán, the highest mountain at 6768 meters.

Half of Peru´s territory lies in the Amazon Basin. With almost half a million people, Iquitos is the largest jungle city linked with the outside world only by air and the Amazon´s river.

Arequipa, Ayacucho, Trujillo, Cajamarca, Huancavelica, Huancayo and Tumbes are fascinating places worth a visit.
